"Innovative solutions are possible when all voices are heard, and that requires campaign finance reform and increased access to the ballot." - Senator Kayse Jama
A vibrant, inclusive democracy requires that the voices of the people come first, not monied interests. For more than two decades, Kayse Jama has been fighting to create a democracy where all Oregonians have their voices heard.
Money in Politics
In 2024, Senator Jama voted to pass an historic bipartisan campaign finance reform bill that set limits on political contributions from wealthy individuals, corporations, unions and other groups. It sets campaign contribution limits and requires so-called dark money groups that spend independently on candidate campaigns to disclose their significant donors.
Senator Jama also worked to hold himself and other elected officials to account by helping to pass the Ethics Reporting of Economic Interests bill, ensuring transparency and curbing self-dealing among those who hold public office.
Expanding Democracy
This year, Senator Jama authored a bill to expand the number of languages into which the voters' pamphlet is translated from 5 to 10, ensuring that more Oregonians can meaningfully understand what - and who - they are voting for.
He previously led a bill that allows newly naturalized U.S. citizens to declare candidacy for the office of Precinct Committee Person.
Election Protection
Senator Jama supported recent bills aimed at keeping election workers safe, providing critical funding for elections, increasing cybersecurity, and upgrading Oregon’s online voter registration system.
